Cathy Miller RN, Psychotherapist

I'm a Registered Nurse and former Music and English teacher. I've also practiced meditation and mindful living for over 25 years. As a nurse, I've worked in an inpatient mental health setting, with unhoused populations, in a family health clinic, and in a residential hospice.

I practice psychotherapy with individual adults 21 and over with a focus on depression, anxiety, grief, life transitions, and learning to live a more meaningful life, day-to-day.

My Approach

Approach

I believe that client-therapist collaborative work using evidence-supported techniques can decrease anxiety and depression and improve quality of life. My approach to therapy helps clients uncover their own existing resources and develop new ones to effectively deal with mood challenges and difficult life situations. For me, mind and body are closely connected and I look for ways to address how each one supports the other in ways that resonate for clients as individuals. As a registered nurse, I have additional insight into medical conditions and physiological processes which may impact emotional well-being.

As well as my professional degrees, I have trained in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), both widely studied and proven to be highly effective in coping with physical pain, anxiety, and depression.

I'm also a secular Buddhist practitioner in the Engaged Buddhism tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and I'm open to discussing this perspective if clients have an interest.

I welcome clients of all races, genders and sexual orientations. I'm an advocate for the role of nature in self-healing and I have a particular interest in the emerging field of "climate psychology" and the impact of the climate crisis on mental health.

You Are Not Your Mistakes

Nurse Psychotherapist Services

Under Ontario's Regulated Health Professions Act, nurses registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) may perform the controlled act of psychotherapy. The CNO requires that nurses who practice psychotherapy as a specialty obtain the appropriate "knowledge, skill, and judgement" to competently provide this care, the same as with specialized care in other areas of nursing in Ontario.

OHIP does not pay for psychotherapy, unfortunately.
Most private insurance companies now cover psychotherapy
services provided by Registered Nurses, but a few will only
cover those provided by a medical doctor (a psychiatrist), a
Registered Social Worker, or a member of the College of
Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). Nurses practicing psychotherapy are actively pressing to be included in benefits coverage the way other trained mental health professionals are. Be sure to check with your benefits provider for their requirements.

I do not offer direct billing, but provide receipts for claims with employer sponsored insurance or for proof of payment for income tax purposes.

Currently I am accepting new clients for in-person sessions in downtown Orangeville. I also work virtually via online video or by telephone for clients anywhere in Ontario.

Payment is due at each session via e-transfer or cheque by mail. In order to offer your appointment time to another client, I require a minimum of 24 hours' notice of appointment change or cancellation. Less than 24 hours notice or missed appointments will be billed at the full session rate.

My services are covered by NIHB benefits, for those who qualify.

My fee for a 50-minute session is $125. Nurses are not required to collect HST on psychotherapy services.
